Surej S.: Thinking Outside the Box
"The Academy is unique for its culture and the ways in which it has been inculcated in the students," says Surej. After finding out from his friends about the International Baccalaureate curriculum and the numerous facilities available at the Academy, "I just couldn’t resist coming," he says.
Studying art at the Academy, Surej is inspired by Piet Mondrian and his works. He also names Paulo Coelho as his role model in life. Surej also enjoys horse riding and dancing. He is learning a new language, French, from his favorite teacher who makes him look forward to the classes every day. He admires her approach to teaching a new language by means of French songs, poems and videos and the way she creates a French aura in the classroom.
Surej primarily enjoys expressing himself on a canvas. “I personally find myself involved in visual arts more than any other subject,” he says passionately. His most unforgettable day was 20 September 2013, the day when he got a chance to meet His Highness the Aga Khan and talk about his paintings.
Surej never really felt assured about his career as an artist due to what he calls "stereotypical ideas" that art does not involve a career. However, he eloquently says, "The Academy has molded me to think beyond what is in the box and to unleash my inner self, and follow my heart."
