The International Day of Non Violence

It was a colourful celebration of the International Day of Non-violence in the Junior School on Friday 2nd October. This date commemorates the birthday of renowned peace activist, Mahatma Gandhi. The Assembly of the United Nations established this day to promote a “message of non-violence… through education and public awareness". The resolution reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".

Junior School explored the concept of non-violence and what this might mean to them through the sharing of stories in their classes and discussing ways in which they can promote peace. The students then moved into mixed class groupings and built a kite with messages of peace and non-violence.

The Junior School then moved outdoors to try flying their messages of peace, hope and non-violence. There was great excitement as kites took flight and much fun in the trying. The students’ kites are now a part of an interactive display in the Junior School as we continue to explore the importance of the philosophy of non-violence.
