Food Drive at AKA,Mombasa

10 March 2014

While the primary aim of our organisation is to solve environmental based concerns facing the communities in Mombasa, we also endeavour to do that which is in our means to address other socioeconomic issues in Mombasa.

Your Environmental Voice & Making a Difference Projects (an organisation created by AKA,Mombasa students) intends to initiate a food drive in order to collect food donations with the intention of distributing the donations to various orphanage homes across Mombasa and its outskirts. Through this project, AKA,Mombasa students will be addressing the pivotal Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger in a bid to improve the socioeconomic welfare of the communities around them. To further make this a sustainable project, they have decided to have the food drive every year, in order to continually contribute towards the fulfilment of  this particular MDG.

While donating food to these communities, they aim to get the community members’ ‘voices’ regarding other socioeconomic issues, including environmental issues, that they face in order to identify the issues and assess the feasibility of aiding their improvement. Lastly, they aim to create a sustainable relationship with the orphanages in order to serve them in the future and make their community a better place. Thus far, the targeted orphanages are around the Kisingo and Bombolulu area. The number of orphanages targeted will expand depending on the donations received.

This project will be initiated at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa where students will be encouraged to donate food as a house competition. The basic rule is that, the house with the most food gets the most points. The house competition will not only involve the Senior School, but also the Junior School. Moreover, most of the food will also be donated from sponsors and individuals from outside the school such as farmers and millers.
