Parents Association raises funds towards Talent ID programme

07 March 2023

The annual Zawadi Bazaar took place in December 2022 and the Parents' Association had a stall to fundraise for the Talent ID students. They tell us more about their experience below.

In November 2022, the newly elected Aga Khan Academy Mombasa Parents' Association (PA) had under two weeks to source for raffle ticket prizes and corporate/business sponsorships for Zawadi Bazaar. The target was to raise KES 280,000 towards the purchase of four laptops for the four new Talent Identification Programme (Talent ID) students who began in January 2023. The total money raised from the banners, sale of raffle tickets and books was KES 155,841. On 19 January 2023, the PA members, Azmina Amarshi (Vice Chair), Tabitha Mutinda (Secretary) and Njambi Warui (PYP Representative), handed over KES 140,000 to Ms Alison Hampshire (Head of Academy) to cater for the purchase of two laptops, with the Academy covering the cost for the other two laptops. The balance of the funds remains in the PA kitty and will be channelled toward future visa fees for Talent ID students who have received scholarships to universities worldwide.

Corporates/businesses that sponsored banners were: Mombasa Cement, Blue Economy Support Centre, Mombasa Maize Millers, Fairdeal, Uniserv, Express Shipping Line, JKP Secretariat, Mombasa Canvas Ltd and Africa PVC Ltd.

Parents are encouraged to reach out to the PA members with ideas/comments they would like brought to the Academy's attention.
