On 10 March 2023, the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka basketball team participated in a tournament at the Pledge Harbor International School in Dhaka. The event brought together student-athletes from four schools around Dhaka. Head of Academy, Mr Bill O’Hearn, was the chief guest of the tournament along with special guests from the Bangladesh Basketball Federation. Coaches, parents and sports enthusiasts were also present and enjoyed the fierce competition between the teams.
There was an electrifying atmosphere on the basketball court as the players proudly paraded in their team colours. Throughout the tournament, promising basketball players showcased their skills through a great display of drills. One of the highlights of the tournament was the three intense games where the AKA Dhaka basketball team players played against teams from older age groups. Despite the challenges, the Academy team played with determination and passion, displaying excellent teamwork and coordination throughout the games. The players were focused and determined to win, but unfortunately, things did not go as planned. Participation in the tournament was a significant achievement in itself, as it allowed the players to showcase their skills and compete against some of the best teams in Dhaka.
Despite the loss, the team remained positive and gracious in defeat. They recognised the efforts of the opposing team and were quick to applaud them for their victory. The players took the loss as a learning experience, identifying areas where they could improve and recognising the importance of continued practice and hard work.
Lead Physical Education Teacher Amit Ahire was proud of the players' efforts.
“I could not be prouder of the efforts our players put in today,” Amit said. “Although we did not come out on top, the team displayed excellent sportsmanship and played with heart until the end. This tournament has been a great learning experience for our team and I'm confident we will come back stronger in the future."
