Last month, we celebrated the milestone of graduating over 1,000 Academies students. As such, this year’s graduating class symbolised the further realisation of His Highness’ vision of building an institution that is "a statement of great hope in the power of good education, and an investment in the development of the best minds who will enable future generations to take charge of their own destinies.” Read on to learn more about the work of the Academies and what defines an Aga Khan Academies Graduate.

His Highness the Aga Khan’s vision for the Academies has always emphasised the importance of students being able to travel between campuses to gain new cultural and educational experiences. The inaugural 3-month student exchange, held late last year, was a significant step towards realising this vision, as students exchanged between the Academies in Mombasa and Hyderabad for the first time. The 2018 graduating classes from the Aga Khan Academies in both Mombasa and Hyderabad performed very well on their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma exams, outperforming their peers in similar IB school programmes globally.

The most recent phase of construction at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo was completed in January 2018 with the opening of the Junior School campus. Fighting stereotypes, it is women who are in leadership roles and key to the construction project's success. There aren't many women in the construction industry in Mozambique in managerial roles, but the team thinks there should be: "As long as the person is qualified and driven, gender does not make a difference."
Since the launch of the Aga Khan Academies’ and the Aga Khan Foundation’s Reading for Children initiative in the Kyrgyz Republic, children have made tremendous progress in their reading skills. The impact has been incredibly unique, and the effect on families has been demonstrated by the formation of home libraries and parents devoting more time to their children.
