On 5 April 2023, Grade 1 students and staff at the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka had the pleasure of attending an informative and engaging guest speaker session featuring Ms Syeda Sharmin Ahmed, the founder of ‘Fruitsicles – handcrafted gourmet ice pops'. The session was perfectly aligned with their ongoing unit's central idea of how the journey of food involves many processes and people, under the theme – “How We Organise Ourselves”.
Ms Syeda enlightened the students with a presentation on the food system, food distribution, and the importance of making responsible decisions regarding healthy food consumption. The young minds were captivated by the origin and processing of the food we consume, as well as the impact of our choices on the environment and our own well-being.
“I loved learning about how the popsicles are made from fruits that grow on farms,” said Grade 1 student Keeana Arik. “It is really yummy and healthy at the same time.”
Ms Sahana Seraji, one of the homeroom teachers of Grade 1, was heartened to see her young students taking an interest in understanding the journey of food and its impact on their health and the environment.
“I believe this session has laid a strong foundation for our students’ future decision-making regarding food consumption,” Ms Sahana said. “As a teacher, it's rewarding to see these young minds grasp the connection between healthy eating and its impact on their lives and the planet.”
