Grade 4 students showcase the expressive power of language

10 June 2024

On 6 June 2024, Grade 4 students at the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka presented insightful projects and cultural shows to parents, teachers and staff demonstrating how language can express ideas, feelings and issues. This was part of their unit display, which had the theme of “how we express ourselves”.

Parents were highly engaged as they navigated through the various unit display stations. Each station was thoughtfully arranged to represent different aspects of the students’ learning journey. Students confidently presented their work, which ranged from creative stories to poems.

“Grade 4 students demonstrated impressive creativity and critical thinking in their comic strips, drama performances and environmental stories, which were all truly inspiring,” said Ms Saadiah Shams, the Grade 4 homeroom teacher.

Artistic projects, including visual arts pieces and music compositions, added a vibrant layer to the display. These artistic expressions underscored the transdisciplinary approach of the unit, weaving together language arts, visual arts and music.

“The best part of this was witnessing the students' agency in action,” said Ms Tasnim Janan, Grade 4 teaching assistant. “From planning their performances to setting up classroom stations, everything was decided, planned and executed by the students under our supervision.”

During the exhibition, Students showcased their projects before parents and staff and shared their learnings confidently.

“Presenting in front of so many people multiple times and giving them a tour of our learning board was a very enjoyable experience,” said Grade 4 student Zunairah Mohammad.

A particularly moving section of the display focused on cultural stories. Students collected and retold stories, showing their understanding of preserving cultural heritage. Parents praised the care and respect with which their children had expressed their gratitude through handwritten letters.

“The part I really liked was performing in the drama to show the audience our responsibilities towards using language,” reflected Grade 4 student Arshan Hossain.

In conclusion, the event was a powerful culmination of the students’ exploration into linguistic expression. It provided them with an opportunity to demonstrate their learning and growth while connecting with their families and community.
