Grade 5 students learn about puberty
Grade 5 students at the Aga Khan Academy Dhaka participated in an informative guest speaker session on adolescence from a renowned physician, Dr Nusrat Sultana, who works in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Medical College for Women and Hospital, Dhaka.
The session gave students a basic understanding of the physical changes they would experience during puberty. It fostered a safe environment for open communication so the students could ask questions and share concerns. Dr Nusrat also addressed reproductive health problems with utmost sensitivity and respect, covering a range of adolescent-related issues, including growth and development and healthy habits.
Dr Nusrat emphasised the necessity of a healthy lifestyle during puberty and discussed the importance of a balanced diet, exercising and adequate sleep. She explained how these practices support healthy growth and development during adolescence.
Although a few students were shy about asking questions about physical development, they overcame their hesitation with Dr Nusrat's encouragement and reassurance and actively contributed to the discussion. She also utilised age-appropriate language and visuals to communicate complex topics effectively.
“Puberty is a sensitive and crucial time of development for our children,” said Dr Nusrat. “I am delighted to share a few insights with these bright and young minds and hope this session will be helpful for them throughout the confusing teenage times.”
