Advancements in the Middle Years Programme at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa
There are some exciting programme changes happening at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa. As of the beginning of this academic year, The Middle Years Programme (MYP) will be extended to a five year course, commencing a year earlier, in Year 6. This change aims at improving the student’s learning experience and facilitating the transition to the more challenging content of the MYP.
The MYP (students aged 11 to 16) provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective. It emphasises intellectual challenge, and encourages students to make connections between the traditional subjects being studied and real life experiences and examples. The programme fosters the development of communication skills, intercultural understanding and global engagement.
This transition will provide our students with additional advantages, including:
- A longer preparation in MYP before joining the Diploma Programme will allow for more disciplinary depth in study in the various subjects of interest;
- Increased time to tackle the mathematical skills required for preparation for Higher and Standard Level courses at the Diploma; particularly for engineering based courses;
- Increased time for students to study the separate natural sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) over a longer period before making a choice;
- Students will have a longer period to interact with IB assessment procedures, thus improving proficiency and deepening understanding of the disciplinary skills and knowledge that will be tested.
While students will remain housed in the familiar environment of the Junior School (with a majority of their teachers being Junior School faculty), they will be able to attend Senior School assemblies, lunches and afterschool activities.
The next intake for the Year 6 residential programme commences on January 6th, 2015. For more information, please contact us.
