AKA, Mombasa Hits Highest Note At Kenya Music Festival!
The Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa students have exceeded expectations this year by winning four first place awards at the 89th edition of the Kenya Music Festival held early August in Kisumu.
Among those who earned first place were Ivy Akinyi, Dinisha D’Silva, David Solomon, Erica Nondi, Sameer Shah, and Catherine Delight. In addition, students also won first and second runner up awards in various categories of the music competitions.
The festival hosted around 150,000 participants from schools, colleges, and universities countrywide to showcase local creative talents in music, dance, and elocution. As the Coastal Region Representative, the Academy’s Voices for Change choir rigorously competed with champions from 7 other regions in Kenya to exhibit award-winning performances.
Voices for Change is trained and assisted by Mr. Philip Agutu, whose commitment and hard work is the catalyst driving the established success of the group on both national and international platforms. Moreover, the Academy’s focus on the creative arts such as music goes beyond award-winning performances and actually teaches students the discipline and team spirit that is integral to achieving goals.Apart from encouraging the development of music, dance, and elocution, the Kenya Music Festival acted as the ideal platform for increasing international awareness about the country’s rich cultural and artistic heritage. Thus, Voices for Change played a crucial role in contributing to the celebration of Kenyan culture and music on an international scale through their exceptional performances.
