AKA Mombasa shines at 39th EAMUN conference
AKA Mombasa students won four awards at the annual 39th East African Model United Nations (EAMUN) conference which took place online from 22 to 26 February 2021. This year’s theme, ‘A Whole New World, Change, Adopt, Thrive’, resonated with the students who have successfully adjusted and continued to prosper in the current global crisis.
12 of our Diploma Programme 1 students participated in the conference with four of them winning awards in different committees as follows: Best Delegate, Politics Committee - Andrew Kamami; Best Speaker, Economics Committee - Mwendwa Mule; Best Speaker, Economics Committee - Ryan Maina; Best Speaker, Human Rights Committee - Furuzon Atobekova.
MUN conferences give students a chance to take on the roles of delegates to debate on and develop concrete solutions to pressing issues in the international community. This unique experience also allows participants to gain a greater understanding of international relations and the United Nations, while also developing a wide range of skills such as public speaking, policy research and collaborative problem-solving skills. This is how their experience was:
“This year’s edition of the conference was different, but will definitely be my most memorable
experience. When it was announced that it was going to be online, I didn’t know what to expect. I was nervous and anxious, but as the days progresses, my contributions grew and my confidence heightened. I am proud that my efforts produced a 'Best Speaker' award. - Ryan Maina
“Although MUN was vastly different this year, it was a very fun experience and I got to see more of what the conference had to offer this year than any other year.” - Mwendwa Mule.
