Changing the World Through Song
DP1 and Year 10 students Mwende and Njeri Mwengi are firm believers they can change the world through their music. They are using their songs to create awareness about issues affecting children in Kenya and featured in the Young Nation supplement of the Sunday Nation newspaper on November 4 highlighting their recently-released album and single on youth issues.
The songs on the debut album, Nisikie, include several written especially for Mwende and Njeri by Mr Philip Agutu, the Academy’s vocal and choir director.
The peace song, Nitakuwepo, composed by Njeri, was prompted by post-election violence. It calls on Kenyans to unite for peace and is receiving considerable air-time from local FM radio stations. Other songs are inspired by street children – telling their stories in order to create an awareness of the challenges they face through the universal language of music.
