Congratulations to the Class of 2019!

19 July 2019

2019 marks the year of the 1000th graduate from the Aga Khan Academies Network. This year we graduated 159 students from the Academies in Mombasa and Hyderabad. Our congratulations to the class of 2019 for their outstanding achievements in the IB Diploma. Here in Mombasa, ninety-six per cent of the cohort of eighty-five students passed the Diploma, compared to the global average in 2018 of seventy-eight per cent. Nine students achieved an outstanding 40+ points with the top three students Armaan Jamal, Malaika Kironde and Karan Khagram achieving 44, 44 and 43 points respectively out of a possible 45 points. As per last year’s statistics, this would place them within the top 8% in the world.

Academy students, selected for their exceptional talent and leadership potential, are inherently well-suited to be Diploma Programme candidates and this year the average overall points score for the cohort was 33 points, well above the global mean of 30, with a quarter of the students achieving 38 points or more.

The Academies’ mission and the IB’s mission resonate in their aspirations to nurture ethical young leaders who will help create a better and more peaceful world marked by empathy and pluralism. To this end, the Academies implement a dual-language programme to develop linguistic and cultural pluralism. This year ten students received a bilingual diploma having completed both the Kiswahili and English Language and Literature courses.

All students in our Financial Aid programmes from Kenya and from Tajikistan achieved the IB Diploma and several have received scholarships for university places. These students have been in the Academy for at least six years, having been identified through rigorous assessments as talented and capable of handling the MYP and Diploma Programmes.

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa would like to thank all our faculty, staff, the graduates’ families, alumni and students for playing a part in nourishing the newest members of our growing alumni network. We would also like to thank our donors who support our financial aid programme, together with partners in the Aga Khan Development Network and other organisations through whom our diploma students experience unique summer service internships annually – placements which shape them to be conscientious and compassionate human beings.
