Golden Climate National Competition

05 March 2014

On the 25th – 26th February 2014, the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa participated in the Golden Climate National Competition. It is a competition which comprises of different projects which are environmentally friendly and support the idea of sustainable development in terms of our surroundings. Its motto states, “Raising a golden generation….to achieve a golden climate.” Initially, there were 200 projects which had qualified for the competition. However, 80 of them were eliminated before the National Round which left 120 projects in the event. The competition was spilt into four categories. These included; Environment, Agriculture, Energy and Engineering for both Senior and Junior sections. We were lucky to have Chizi Gakuo and Cindy Makau representing the school under Agriculture; Maxwin Ojwang’ and Shivam Vyas under Energy; Karishma Bhagani under Engineering and Yasin Ghani under Engineering for the Junior section in the National Round which was held at the Light Academy, Mombasa

Many schools participated in the competition, bringing forth innovative ideas with them and presenting their projects before the three judges whom were present in each category. It was indeed a tight competition as the projects showed thoughtful and intellectual input regarding the creativity which was evident in many projects. Out of approximately 22 projects in each category, the school managed to win three gold medals for the Senior Section. These were; Eco-friendly Insecticide by Chizi and Cindy; Simple Electric Generator using powered by magnetic field by Maxwin and Shivam and A Cost Effective Water Purifier by Karishma. We also managed to win a bronze medal in the Junior section under Engineering field whereby Yasin Ghani’s project, Solar – Y – Fly, was third position. All these students mentioned above will be participating in the International Round in Nairobi on 29th – 30th April 2014. The same projects will be presented at the International Round with modifications due to the improvements suggested by the judges from the National Round. We wish them all the best.
