Hawks Usher In a Victory at Senior School Interhouse Debate Competition
The AKA, Mombasa Senior School kept competition alive for the House Championship by hosting an Interhouse Debate Competition on Friday 23 January, 2015.
After weeks of preparation by the participants and their house masters, the teams finally took their places in the first round of the competition. The motion was “Providing universal access to secondary education in Kenya is more important than the quality of its secondary education”, which pitted the Hawks against the Falcons. The Hawks proposed the motion, and claimed a win over the Falcons opposing them. This round also saw the Ravens and Eagles in a battle of words, where the Eagles, who were opposing the motion, emerged victorious against the Ravens proposing it.
Round two then paired the winners of the first round against each other for the ultimate position of debating glory. The Ravens and Falcons still had some verbal sparring to do as well, to determine the holders of third and fourth place. This time, the motion was more international: “The UN should impose sanctions on Russia for its aggressive actions in the Ukraine.” In this second debate the opposition, the Falcons, got one over the Ravens and claimed third place, while the Ravens had to settle for fourth. After the Hawks and Eagles eloquently vied for first place, the Hawks soared into victory and the Eagles were relegated to second place.
The results of this Interhouse Competition will contribute towards the final results of this year’s House Championships, with the Ravens and Hawks each having secured some wins, the Eagles and Falcons will also be looking to change the standings as the academic year continues.
Congratulations to the Hawks, and great job to all the participants and supporters! We look forward to seeing even more opinions and arguments come out in next year’s competition.
