It's Exhibition Time
The PYP Exhibition has a great buzz of the enjoyment of learning – in this case, through self-directed research by the Year 6 students. The PYP exhibition opening was held on Tuesday evening, 11 June, with the guest of honour Mr Suleiman Shahbal, well known for his interest in environmental issues for a sustainable future, declaring the exhibition open. The PYP Exhibition is a significant feature of the last term of the IB curriculum in the Junior School. For the Exhibition, students choose a topic, and then spend some weeks researching and developing their ideas and finally presenting them to the wider community.
After the ceremonial cutting of the red ribbon it was time for parents to interact with the students while they presented what they had learnt, and answered questions. The 60 students in the class investigated and presented on a wide range of topics including human rights, poverty, conflict resolution, technology, art, music, photography, fashion, theatre, disabilities, healthy eating, engineering, marine issues, education and more. They were articulate and confident when explaining their ideas and what they had learnt, as well as deftly handling questions from the audience, which showed how well prepared they were. The Exhibition remains open for another two days for other classes, parents, teachers and friends to visit.
This is, as Mr Wilkins, the Junior School Principal noted, a time of celebration – celebrating what the students have learned and achieved during their six years in the Junior School, but also a time for a little sadness as in a week’s time the students will leave the Junior School to go on holiday and then return to begin the Middle Years Programme in the Senior School.
The students are to be congratulated, along with their teachers who have mentored them over the past few weeks. They will all be looking forward to a well-earned summer holiday.
