La Semaine de la Francophonie!
From March 16-20, 2009, teachers and students of the Senior School celebrated French Language during “la Semaine de la Francophonie” (Francophone or French Language Week). In English, this French term refers to the week promoting the French language and cultures of countries where French is largely spoken.
For that special event, the Modern Foreign Languages Department (MFL) launched many activities for the school to be immersed in a French language atmosphere. During that week, the school was creatively decorated with posters, flyers, and banners written in French by Year 7 and Year 11 students.
The week’s Thursday assembly focused on this event and was led exclusively in French by students ranging from Year 7 to DP2 level who participated in different ways. In this dynamic assembly, skits were staged by Year 7 and Year 8 students. Plus, Year 7 students recited poems. Moreover, the audience had the opportunity to hear students as well as a teacher, Mrs Esther Nondi, perform French songs. Furthermore, DP1 students presented a fashion show and show-cased attires from all over the francophone world!
On Friday 20th March, students got the opportunity to taste French cuisine as the canteen had gratin dauphinois (a traditional dish with potatoes and white cream), boeuf bourguignon (a dish with beef and vegetables) and crêpes (pancakes) on the menu. At the end of the day, students were divided into groups: Year 7 and 8, Year 9 and 10 and Year 11, DP1 and DP2. These groups engaged with French language through games, quizzes and role plays. Moreover these activities gave the school houses the opportunity to increase their points.
Overall, “la Semaine de la Francophonie” was an enjoyable and lively event which gave the opportunity to Senior School students to actively participate in the celebration of one of the languages taught in the school.
