Sports Everywhere You Looked On Campus and Off
Over the weekend there were sports taking place everywhere you looked at the Academy. The biggest event was the Inter-School Junior Athletics Championships held on the main field on Saturday morning. Five schools participated: the Aga Khan Academy (who finished in first place overall), Shree Swaminarayan Academy (second), Jaffery (third), Oshwal (fourth), Light Academy (fifth) and Braeburn (sixth). They took part in a variety of events for the Under 8, 10 and 12 age groups.
In the multipurpose hall, the Academy's Invitational Basketball tournament was held with players from five schools each playing four games. The tournament was won by Shimo La Tewa, with Mombasa Baptist in second place, Light Academy third, Serani Boys fourth and the Aga Khan Academy in fifth place.
On Sunday, an inline skating competition was held on the hard courts—the first time this has been hosted at the Academy but probably not the last. There were around 100 entries, and it was a great competition.
Meanwhile, off campus 11 members of the swim team were taking part in the Kenyan National Long Course Swimming Championships in Nairobi. A total of 32 teams took part in this competition with the Aga Khan Academy coming third overall for the combined team scores. Shivraj Vaghela was the Best Swimmer in his age group (14-15 year-old boys) while Karan Khagram broke two national records and was third in his age group (10-11 year-old boys).
Well done to all the competitors for trying their best—while it’s not all about winning, it is certainly satisfying to see hard and consistent practice rewarded. Thanks also to all those who supported these events, both through coaching and also by undertaking the myriad other tasks that must be done to make such events successful and enjoyable.
