Swahili Week celebrations
The Academies aim to develop future leaders who are internationally minded and culturally rooted. The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, pioneered the Swahili-English Primary Years Programme (PYP). The programme includes the dual-language programme in the lower grades and a trans-languaging model in the upper grades.
“The bilingual programme ensures that students have deep connections to their local context and culture. Allowing students to engage with their community in their own language, building an authentic understanding of its heritage and traditions, is vital to maintaining strong links with their home. This gives Academies students the understandings and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the development of their community, both now and in the future,” says Alex Holland, Academic Development Manager at the Aga Khan Academies.
To commemorate the end of Swahili Week, the students celebrated Swahili culture by dressing in Swahili attire, and performing songs, dances and plays in Swahili.
