Year 10 Girls Use Entrepreneurship to Give Back
On Saturday, 9 May 2015, three girls from Year 10 visited Our Lady of Fatima Mixed Secondary School to share the benefits of their profits from this year’s Zawadi Bazaar with the local community.
The Zawadi Bazaar, set up to encourage leadership and entrepreneurship in the Senior School, required students to run a stall and successfully generate a profit. They then donated half of their proceeds towards a cause of their choice. Vanessa Mayer, Ziana Bhanji and Vivian Mun’garo decided to tie the two objectives together.
From the supplier for their stall, Robert Mutuku, the girls were introduced to Our Lady of Fatima Mixed Secondary School, a secular school that opened up in February 2015. Robert, who is affiliated with the school, illuminated the various issues, such as lack of school supplies that the school community was suffering from.
The girls then decided to use their profits to buy some supplies for the students, such as textbooks and stationery, and also spent the day with the students carrying out various fun activities. This is the first step in what Vanessa, Ziana and Vivian hope will be a sustainable project.
The girls, currently in Year 10, hope to expand this project and continue it in their Diploma Programme next year as part of their CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) component. They are looking to collaborate with the younger students at the Academy to provide entrepreneurship and leadership opportunities to them, as well as allow the relationship with the students at Our Lady of Fatima to grow into a mentoring program.
Well done to you, girls! We look forward to seeing the progression of your project.
