Year 7s explore Haller Park
Year 7 students from AKA Mombasa went on an ecology-based trip to Haller Park on 7 February 2020 which served as further insight into the unit ‘Life in the Natural World’, currently being explored by Year 7s.
The purpose of the trip was for the students to further understand the relationships between biotic and abiotic factors of an ecosystem.
“In the context of our Haller Park trip, through experiential learning, our students got to learn through observation, questioning, discussion and interaction with both living and non-living components of the environment, as opposed to reading about animals from books, listening to the teacher or watching animal documentaries,” said Science teacher Erick Agira. “It was inspiring for our students to discover the history of reclaiming Haller Park, which was once a wasteland after cement mining. It also challenged our students to be agents of environmental conservation.”
“I enjoyed going around seeing different animals,” said Year 7 student Branice Mukolwe. “I got a chance to know more about the animals and how they live and depend on each other.”
The trip was a great way for students to bond with each other as they got to learn more about their environment outdoors.
