Mwanapwani Said: Inspired to make a difference

Year 10 student Mwanapwani Said, who comes from Msambweni in Kwale County, joined the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa in 2017 on a full scholarship through the Talent Identification Programme (TID). This programme is developed in line with the Academy’s vision to provide exceptional students with an international-standard education and leadership opportunities, regardless of their ability to pay.

When she first received the news that she had been accepted to the Academy, Mwanapwani was elated and thankful. She was excited about studying under the Academy’s unique and holistic curriculum because she knew it was going to be a life-changing opportunity that would open many doors for her.

“I felt so grateful about receiving a full scholarship because it greatly reduced my financial burden. I became more driven than ever to create a fully rewarding experience for myself,” Mwanapwani said.

Having been at the Academy for nearly four years now, Mwanapwani has availed herself of every opportunity to strive for the better. Her growth has been reflected in academics as well as sports, where she has picked up a passion for football. In addition, being selected to participate in the Exchange Programme with AKA Hyderabad exposed her to a new culture, one that enabled her to gain an understanding of her identity and values whilst appreciating the varying perspectives of others.

Commenting on how the Academy has shaped her outlook on life, Mwanapwani stated: “The Academy has changed me for the better as I now know more about myself. Learning to have a pluralistic approach has taught me to be respectful of the opinions and values of others. I have also learnt to work well with others because I believe great things can be achieved when we work together and I feel like this is an important aspect that will help me in the future.”

"Mwanapwani is a very cheerful and conscious student. She is upbeat about life and hardly sees challenges as hurdles, but rather as trophies on her way up. Having been selected from TID, she has proved her mettle over the years in her Middle Years Programme. She is all-rounded, self-driven and radiates an aura of confidence around her peers. I consider myself fortunate to be around this positive personality," said Head of Residential Life Benson Wafula about Mwanapwani.

An aspiring health professional, Mwanapwani’s vision is crystal clear. She is duty-bound to make a difference.

“I feel like I have been prepared for the real world, to be mindful of others and to give back. I want to work hand in hand with members of my community to make a change in society.”

Sporting Activities

One of the goals of the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is to create principled young people with a strong sense of integrity, honesty, fairness and justice, who respect the dignity of others.

Physical education, and competitive games and sports prepare our students for real-life situations, encouraging them to take leadership roles and allowing them to tackle challenges confidently and in a spirit of cooperation.

Inter-school sports

Both Junior and Senior School students have the opportunity to represent their school in various sports, such as swimming, cricket, rounders, basketball, hockey, netball, football and athletics.

Our teams train regularly during the week and cater to students of all ability levels.

Clubs

We offer a diverse selection of sporting activities for our students during after school clubs.

Inter-house events

Students of both the Junior and Senior Schools are allocated to houses. We hold a number of inter-house events during the year, including the inter-house swimming gala and inter-house athletics.

IB Workshops



We are excited to announce that our second IB workshop for this year will be held virtually and will take place on 5-7 October.
 

About our IB Workshops

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa offers authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) teacher training workshops for Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programme teachers.

To accommodate a diverse range of learners, the IB workshops are designed for both new and experienced teachers interested in increasing their knowledge and expertise about the IB programme.

The workshops include strategies and techniques for teaching IB courses effectively in the classroom and are led by highly trained IB experts. Each workshop allows teachers to assess and build their skills in the curriculum as well as understand and compare assessment criteria.

The workshops offer teachers a chance to interact directly with and offer their input to the workshop leaders. They also allow the participants to discuss and share their ideas, practices and strategies while working alongside other IB teachers from a broad range of backgrounds.

The workshop fee is USD 650.

An invoice will be sent to you once we receive the payment confirmation. The fees must be paid in full before the deadline and a receipt will be issued.

University Counselling

The Aga Khan Academy Dhaka’s counselling programme offers students a vast array of resources designed to help them find good matches between themselves and universities/colleges. These resources include a dynamic and well-resourced college counsellor, a wealth of printed, video and online tools, and a series of informational workshops and seminars on topics central to the college discovery process.

Our counsellors engage students in individual conferences that are designed to help students reach a greater awareness of who they are. Armed with the well-articulated sense of self, students are prepared to find universities or colleges that are the best fit. Ours is a student-centred approach, and we believe that the likelihood of satisfaction with their choices is enhanced when students are empowered to 'own' the process. Also key to success is good communication among all parties: students, parents and college counsellors. While outcomes are important, it is the process of self-discovery and college-discovery on which our programme focuses.

The Junior and Senior Schools

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is made up of two schools, the Junior School and the Senior School, which together cater to students from year 1 (age 6) to university entrance.

Junior School

We currently welcome 181 day students in the Junior School (years 1–5), most of whom are from the local area. All Junior School students follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP). Through the PYP, our students learn to be confident, independent and creative learners.

The Junior School building has been designed to address the needs of younger children, with age-appropriate facilities and classrooms. In addition to the PYP classrooms, the building contains the Junior School library, and music, art and information technology rooms. There are also large playing fields and an adventure playground.

Senior School

The Senior School currently houses over 500 students. Those from the local area attend as day students, while those from other parts of the country or region live on campus as part of the residential programme.

Students in the Senior School pursue either the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) or the IB Diploma Programme (DP).

The Middle Years Programme is for students in years 6–10. It helps them master essential skills and knowledge, and teaches them to be critical and analytical thinkers. 

The Diploma Programme is offered to students in the final two years of school. It is an internationally recognised and demanding programme that prepares students for university entrance.

The school caters to both the intellectual and personal growth of students. 

 

The Senior School has a wide range of facilities that include:

  • Laboratories for the sciences as well as for home science and computers
  • Art and music rooms
  • Library and resource centre
  • Religion and culture room
  • Career counselling centre
  • Design and technology workshop
  • Student and teacher lounges
  • Theatre
  • Multipurpose hall
  • Cafeteria and dining area  

The building is networked so that computers become common resources for teachers and students. The multipurpose hall can be used for a variety of events ranging from theatre productions to parent-teacher meetings. The school also has swimming, basketball, badminton, volleyball and gymnastics facilities as well as playing fields for soccer, field hockey and athletics.

Khushboo Khoja (Class of 2016): Giving back to communities

“My experience at the Academy was very significant as it made me realise that I am interested in working with social issues and helping communities,” reflects Khushboo Khoja, a 2016 graduate from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad. 

Her passion for helping others, which was sparked through service learning initiatives she participated in at the Academy, is something Khushboo has taken with her to university. She is currently enrolled in the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, and recently completed her first year of post-secondary education. As a recipient of a tuition waiver through the Aga Khan Academies–Ontario tuition waiver programme, Khushboo is thankful for the opportunity to attend a university in Canada: “When I found out that I got the scholarship, it was a very grateful moment because it would change my whole life. The fact that I am able to get an education of this kind in Canada helps me build my future and enhances my entire quality of life.”

During her time at the Aga Khan Academy, Khushboo was able to help others improve their quality of life by volunteering at a government school for four years teaching English and math: “I always looked forward to finishing class and going there because those girls were so inspiring. Most of the girls didn’t come from as privileged backgrounds and didn’t have everything they needed, but were so happy and always so motivated and satisfied with everything they had.”  

Khushboo continued this work through a summer internship in a village in India, where she learned more about the importance of education and awareness regarding sanitation and immunization: “While engaging with the community of the village and learning about their health and hygienic needs, we conducted school plays to spread awareness about the importance of healthy alcohol-free and tobacco-free lives. The special bond that I built with the people of the village motivates and inspires me to keep learning from the diverse communities I am surrounded with and making significant contributions in whatever ways I can. I am glad to have been opened to a new perspective in which a place does not necessarily have to be changed but has to first be accepted and appreciated.”  

Khushboo attributes her ability to take her classroom learning and put it into practice to her time at the Academy: “I feel like my experience at the Academy allowed me to perceive in a more holistic and practical way. The experience was not just about what we were reading in books or learning, but also about incorporating values and ethics in our daily lives and applying our knowledge to better ourselves and the community. The integrated learning experience helped me learn how to learn, which I now carry with me wherever I go and whenever I am learning.” 

During her short time in Canada, Khushboo has already begun making a difference in the community around her. Her volunteer activities include helping at the Merrymount Family Support and Crisis Centre, where she assists with counselling parents and children who are in crisis and/or experiencing times of transition. She was also elected to the executive team for the Ismaili Students Association as the ‘frosh representative’ where she has the opportunity to organise educational and social events for the members of the association: “I am the representative for the first-year students. I enjoy meeting new people from different cultures yet from the same community - the beautiful blend makes me appreciate the pluralistic atmosphere that’s created.”  

She has also successfully applied for a leadership position on campus as a residence advisor where one of her primary roles will be to foster a community atmosphere in the residence. When not busy studying or volunteering, Khushboo also plays indoor soccer on the intramural team at Western. 

One of Khushboo’s passions is working with women and children, promoting health and education. For Khushboo, going back to India and continuing this work is incredibly important: “I want to bring awareness and enrich the accessibility of resources. Sometimes it’s not about changing things but rather bringing a new perspective to people that may help them. Depending on the context, approaches to the occurring difficulties of people have to be altered, with broadening horizons.”

* Does not include transport and lunch fees. A 50% premium will be applicable on tuition fees for international students.


  1. One-time, non-refundable admission fee is payable for each student enrolling for the first time.
  2. One-time refundable security deposit is payable upon acceptance of admission. It is refundable when the student leaves the school as long as the required notice has been given in writing and “No dues” clearance is obtained from the school. No interest is paid or payable on this deposit.
  3. A sibling discount of 5% of tuition fees will be applicable for second and subsequent children.
  4. Tuition fee may be paid in full with an early payment discount of 3%, if paid before 31 July.
  5. Tuition fee may be paid in two equal instalments, no later than 31 July and 31 December of each academic year.
  6. Tuition fee must be paid within 30 days of admission to secure a place at the Academy.
  7. Tuition fee includes course fees, the use of essential course books, library books, IT structure, science laboratory equipment and certain classroom supplies. This, however does not include school uniform.
  8. Parents of returning students will be invoiced four to six weeks prior to the new academic year.
  9. The fees can be paid in US dollars or Meticais. For making payment in metical, exchange rate of invoice date i.e. 15 June and 15 November will be applicable. The Academy however reserves the right to change this policy.
  10. Parents must provide the finance department (finance.maputo@agakhanacademies.org) proof of payment made through direct deposit or bank transfer even if payment is done by an organisation or a company.
  11. If a student wishes to leave the school, one term’s advance notice of withdrawal must be given in writing or, in lieu of notice; one term of the annual fees will be due and payable. School clearance will not be possible until an account is settled in full.
  12. The Academy reserves the right to withheld results, school certificate, transcripts or any other information and/or documents until all outstanding dues are settled in full.
  13. Students who have been admitted to the Academy, and can demonstrate need, will be considered for financial aid.
  14. The above terms and conditions may be modified or new terms may apply to reflect changes in the law or our services.
