IB Workshops



We are excited to announce that our second IB workshop for this year will be held virtually and will take place on 5-7 October.
 

About our IB Workshops

The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa offers authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) teacher training workshops for Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programme teachers.

To accommodate a diverse range of learners, the IB workshops are designed for both new and experienced teachers interested in increasing their knowledge and expertise about the IB programme.

The workshops include strategies and techniques for teaching IB courses effectively in the classroom and are led by highly trained IB experts. Each workshop allows teachers to assess and build their skills in the curriculum as well as understand and compare assessment criteria.

The workshops offer teachers a chance to interact directly with and offer their input to the workshop leaders. They also allow the participants to discuss and share their ideas, practices and strategies while working alongside other IB teachers from a broad range of backgrounds. 

Workshop fees

The workshop fee is USD 650.

An invoice will be sent to you once we receive the payment confirmation. The fees must be paid in full before the deadline and a receipt will be issued.

Alyssa Jamal: Swinging her way toward success

From the age of 3 Alyssa Jamal has played golf – a sport she holds close to her heart. Due to her continuous passion and determination for the sport, Alyssa, a Year 9 student at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, has become a golf aficionado, competing in more than 200 games over the past four years.  

“I started playing golf because of my dad, Aly Jamal, who is also a golfer,” Alyssa said. “As a child I used to accompany my dad and hit balls on the practice range whenever he would go play. That's when he realised that I was good at golf and that’s when I started getting lessons to learn how to play golf from the pros at the Nyali Golf Club.” 

Since Alyssa received her handicap in 2015, which is a numerical measure of a golfer’s potential with better players having lower handicaps, she has competed in numerous national and international competitions. Some noteworthy competitions include the U.S. Kids Golf International Competition, the 72 Holes Junior Stroke play Championship, Royal and many more.  

“I love the game of golf,” Alyssa said. “It has taught me so many things, for example, etiquette, patience, focus and, most importantly, it has helped me in my social skills. I am passionate about the sport because it also helps me unwind from my busy school schedule.” 

Alyssa said golf provides her with many opportunities to connect with different players, form closer bonds with her family and boosts her determination to always succeed. 

“I’ve met European Tour professionals when competing and when I go for international and national tournaments I meet new people, which has led me to make so many friends,” Alyssa said. “Also, my dad and brother are golfers as well so whenever we travel, we play golf as a family, which is so much fun and it’s a great way of bonding. I have also won so many tournaments and won so many amazing prizes, which is also a great source of motivation for me to prove myself over and over and try to win competitions.” 

Although she has been playing for many years, Alyssa said she still finds herself as the only girl competing in golf for her age. 

“Unfortunately, I’m the only junior girl golfer in the coast,” Alyssa said. “Sometimes I feel bad that I don’t have any girl friends to compete with that are my age. However, there are boy juniors my age that I compete with and they are my good friends. I also know junior golfers from Nairobi, Arusha, Nakuru, South Africa, Scotland and Uganda whom I meet at least once a year when there are national or international competitions, and I keep in touch with them through social media. In Mombasa at the Nyali Golf Club, I play golf with both males and females who are sometimes twice or thrice my age, but they all love and take care of me and they are always happy to play with me. At Nyali Golf Club we are all like a big golfing family and I look forward to going there every single Saturday.” 

No matter her age or her busy schedule, Alyssa said golf will always be a part of her life.  

“Golf is a sport I will never give up on, even when I get old,” Alyssa said. “You will always find me on the golf course.”

Samy Natho Jina: Using information technology to better the world


Samy Natho Jina is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Year 12 student at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. In addition to being an informed global citizen, Samy is a skilled and talented self-taught computer coder. Currently pursuing Information Technology in a Global Society at higher level as part of his IB Diploma, he strives to derive ways through which he can use information technology (IT) to create value in today’s society and tackle social and ethical issues. He says, “Building systems is not enough; for me, considering the impact on the stakeholder’s life is also a key factor.”

Samy’s passion for computers began on his sixth birthday when he received a “slow and old Acer laptop.” He says that because the laptop was too slow to play computer games, he used his time to explore the computer’s settings and discovered all the features that were being offered by Windows XP. As a result of his vivid curiosity and experimental nature, Samy unknowingly installed virus software which caused the computer to crash. Determined to fix his computer, Samy tried all the possible methods to restore it: he sought advice from many adults, attempted creative problem-solving techniques, and even visited a computer scientist to figure out what was happening.

Ultimately, Samy’s curiosity and determination led him to discover that this – dealing with computers and software – was what he wanted to do for a living in the future. Samy now aspires to develop his skills at university through studying software engineering and computer science.

Along with being a hardworking IB student, Samy is constantly working on new applications, coding new projects, and making apps for various companies. The first app he created was for his parents to help their pharmaceutical company handle online business management, archive files and track sales. He created another security software for a non-profit organisation for referencing and tracking individuals for an event. Samy also designed an advanced website for a TEDx event in Mombasa, Kenya where he added security and ticketing features. Samy comments, “As my understanding increases so does my passion.” An extremely driven individual, he also uses online platforms such as OpenClassrooms to learn coding languages like HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP5, jQuery and others, for which he has also gained many certificates. “With each new language I learn, I become more excited about that field,” Samy explains.

Samy believes that in five to 10 years, the whole world will depend more on information technology than it currently does today. He believes that there is a great future in developing modern technologies for medical applications, and wishes to be at the core of the technological development that will advance medical health applications. Samy believes in practical application along with theoretical learning and is working hard to bring about a positive change.

Samy is extremely grateful for the opportunities he has been granted to use his skills for the betterment of the local community with support from the encouraging environment at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa. Samy says, “For each and every project, I have spent countless nights out of my own free will fixing incorrect lines of code. It is my dream to make sure this talent and passion I have for software development and computers can be used to make this world a better place.”

1st network exchange between Hyderabad and Mombasa Academies

Congratulations to Laboni Banerjee, S.N Prasad and Ira Shrivastav who are headed to Mombasa through the March break for professional development and learning exchange. 3 teachers from Mombasa will come to Hyderabad for 2 weeks in April.
