Grade 10 Aga Khan Academy Dhaka students presented their projects at the annual Personal Project Exhibition on 17 February.
Naail Lakhani: Learner Agency Through Coding
Naail Lakhani, a Year 5 student in Junior School, has demonstrated incredible maturity, leadership, and initiative since joining the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa in 2018. His proudest achievement is founding the Junior School Coding Club, an after-school extracurricular activity to teach coding to young minds. With approximately 30 members, Naail has been running the club successfully for over a year now.
Naail developed his passion for coding at the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic. “One day, I decided to search up easy coding for kids, and I stumbled upon this great website called Khan Academy which taught me different programming languages like C++ and Javascript,” said Naail. “I was then approached by Ms. Nuala Alibhai, the Head of Student Support and well-being in Junior School, who knew about my interest in coding and proposed the idea of starting a club in school. I agreed, and the coding club was born.”In addition to teaching coding skills, the club encourages its members to develop learner agency - shifting ownership of learning from teachers to students. "I believe that learner agency is important because it allows students to build their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as perseverance and adaptability," Naail said. Members of the club attain learner agency by practicing coding rather than just learning it so that they can have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and test their understanding.
“I have been a part of the coding club since it first began, so for over a year now, and I have loved every minute of it,” says Kanika Tahiliani, a student in Year 4. “I learnt how to make shapes and add color to different objects like foods and a snowman using code.”
As Naail transitions to Senior School, he plans to continue and expand his club. By increasing the club’s capacity and opening up the club to both Junior and Senior School, Naail hopes to inspire more students to pursue coding. “My coding club is just the beginning,” said Naail. “I can already see myself working in tech companies like Google when I am older, or maybe I can even start my own company.”

Junior School
Years 1–6: Primary Years Programme
Students entering year 1 should have completed at least three years of Nursery School and must be 6 years of age by 31 December of the year of entry.
All prospective students must demonstrate a potential for high academic achievement and demonstrate competency in literacy and numeracy. Each applicant from year 2-5 must sit a standard assessment in logic, English (reading and writing), mathematics and creativity and supplemented by personal interviews with key members of the Junior School staff.
Senior School
Years 7–10: Middle Years Programme
All students applying for a place in the Senior School must have attained high scholastic achievement in their former educational institutions. They must also demonstrate a keen interest and participation in community service projects outside the classroom and/or extracurricular activities such as sporting activities, clubs, arts and music.
All applicants must schedule an appointment for a standard assessment test in logic, English, mathematics and problem-solving at the school in addition to providing past student grade reports and certificates of achievement. Applicants will also have personal interviews with key members of the Senior School staff as part of their application process.
Diploma Programme
Years 11–12: Diploma Programme
Applicants for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement (with a minimum of an average B grade from their current school) as well as a proven record of civic mindedness and participation in community projects.
The application process requires prospective students to undergo a standardised assessment test in English, mathemathics and logic as well as an interview with IB Diploma Programme coordinators and key members of Senior School staff.
New students will not be accepted in the second year of the diploma programme.

Embedded in our programme, the Aga Khan Curricular Strands (AK Strands) aim to strengthen understandings and outlooks needed by leaders of the future.
They encompass five critical areas of study:

- Cultures (with an emphasis on Muslim civilisations)
- Governance and Civil Society
- Economics for Development.
The AK Strands examine issues of global importance and are also tailored to the cultural context of each Academy. This allows students to engage with international issues and challenges while remaining strongly grounded in their local context.
India's Best Schools of 2015
The Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad has improved its ranking from the sixth to the third best day-cum-boarding international school in India by the leading education publication Education World (EW). The recognition was part of EW’s ranking of the best Indian schools for 2015.
This is a tremendous achievement for the Academy, which opened only in 2011 with its first group of Junior School students and was formally inaugurated by His Highness the Aga Khan in 2013.

The Academies Network
The Aga Khan Academy Mombasa is the first of a planned network of Aga Khan Academies being established in countries across Africa, South and Central Asia, and the Middle East.
The aim of the Academies is to develop future leaders with the skills and knowledge to support positive development in their societies. We achieve this by recruiting exceptional young people from all backgrounds and providing them with the highest international standard of education.
Admission is means-blind and based on merit to ensure access for eligible students regardless of financial circumstances.
When complete, the network of Academies will form a global learning community of approximately 18 schools in 14 countries (map). They will eventually serve approximately 14,000 girls and boys of exceptional calibre, graduating 1,500 students annually.

Alqaim Lalani (Class of 2019): The importance of mentoring and positively contributing to the community
Although it has been a few years since he graduated from the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa, Alqaim Lalani, Class of 2019, says his years at the Academy had a major bearing on his academic career and strongly influenced his outlook on life. Now, as a graduate of Columbia University in New York, Alqaim is giving back to the Aga Khan Academies community that he says shaped his life and gave him so much.
Originally from Tanzania, Alqaim was actively involved in the Academy’s community. As a dorm captain in the residential programme, he learnt time-management skills, maturity and developed strong work ethics. He also gained a passion for positively contributing to his communities, which could be seen in the social enterprise he founded as a student called “Tumaini la Maisha Cancer Initiative”, which supports economically disadvantaged children suffering from cancer to raise money from crafts they make to subsidise their own care. His efforts gained widespread recognition in Tanzania, where he was named one of the ‘Most Influential Young Tanzanians’ for his achievements in social enterprise and philanthropy.
However, upon entering university, Alqaim discovered a new passion: mentoring students during their university application process. Since he began his undergraduate studies in 2019, Alqaim mentored International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme 1 and 2 Academies students, who he believes “are at a very critical stage in their lives,” because they are at the juncture of shifting from school to university.
“Transitioning from high school to university can be daunting, given the pressures to choose what you want to study, partake in activities and internships and ultimately determine how you want to start your career – all in the span of a few very consequential years,” Alqaim said.
Alqaim’s interest in wanting to mentor stems from his own experience at Columbia, where he was introduced to an alumni network and inclusive student community. He soon learnt that Columbia and some other universities actively supported first-year students in selecting courses, applying for campus societies and recruiting for selective careers.
“Even before stepping foot on campus, I was being supported by a community committed to my success, enabling me to transition quite seamlessly once I arrived on campus,” he says.
Alqaim knew he wanted to pay it forward and ensure other students felt this level of support. To date, Alqaim has mentored 11 Academies students from Mombasa and Hyderabad across varying aspects of the university application process. From building a shortlist of institutions that meet their academic and financial needs to approaching standardised tests with confidence and ultimately bringing their authentic self forward when voicing their achievements and background.
One of the students who benefitted from Alqaim’s mentorship is Ayaan Dewani, Class of 2023 from the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad, who is studying at Boston University with a full-ride scholarship.
"I am incredibly grateful for the invaluable assistance I received from Alqaim during my university application process,” Ayaan said. “His guidance and support were instrumental in helping me navigate the complex and often overwhelming journey toward higher education. He took the time to understand my interests, strengths and aspirations and then provided tailored advice on which universities would be the best fit for me. His insights were spot-on, and he helped me create a well-rounded list of target schools that aligned with my academic and personal goals.”
Considering it a privilege to work with students, Alqaim believes he, too, is benefitting from his mentoring.
“Serving as a mentor has helped improve my leadership skills, exposed me to new perspectives and consolidated lessons I previously learnt,” Alqaim said. “I believe the true value of mentorship lies in eliciting self-reflection and critical thinking from the mentee, rather than simply rearticulating one’s own experience.”
Although he is currently working in financial services, Alqaim continues to support Academies students through this journey by working with them to find internships and jobs that appeal to their talents, and helping them foster the transition from student to working professional by connecting them to other alumni a part of the Aga Khan Academies Alumni Association.
“My experience at the Aga Khan Academy Mombasa has been pivotal in my life,” Alqaim says.

NOTES:
- A one-time, non-refundable admission fee is payable for students enrolling for the first time. The admission fee must be paid to secure a place for a child at the Academy. This cannot be deferred or paid for in instalments. The due date is one week after the offer has been accepted.
- A one-time refundable security deposit is also payable upon acceptance of admission and should be paid with the admission fee mentioned above. It is refundable when a student leaves the Academy as long as the required notice has been given in writing and “No Dues” clearance is obtained from the Academy. No interest is payable on this deposit.
- A Sibling Discount of 5% on tuition fees will be applicable for second and subsequent children.
- The total fees for the academic year may be paid in full with an early-payment discount of 3% on or before 31 July 2025.
- The fee is payable on due dates as mentioned in the invoice/memo for the services.
- The Academy will charge a monthly surcharge of 2% on outstanding dues older than 30 days. If the full fee that is due is not paid within one month following the deadline, the student will not be allowed to attend classes or participate in other activities undertaken by the Academy.
- The Total Fee includes course fees, use of essential course books, library books, IT and science laboratory equipment, and certain classroom supplies.
- The parent may need to provide a suitable laptop for Senior School students. The laptop cost may typically range from INR 30,000 to INR 50,000. Additionally, uniforms, optional trips and activities for Senior School students may incur extra costs estimated to be around INR 35,000 annually.
- Exam Fees for the IB Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme will be billed separately based on the actual fee issued by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
- Parents of returning students will be invoiced four to six weeks prior to the new Academic Year.
- The Academy does not accept cash for fee payments. All payments must be made by Direct Bank Deposit, Bank Transfer, Cheque or Demand Draft even if the payment is being made by a third party such as a sponsoring organisation. Parents must provide the Finance Office (finance@agakhanacademies.org) with a hard or an electronic copy of proof of payment showing the student's full name and the student identification number within 15 days of fund transfer for issuance of payment receipt. The absence of this information may delay crediting the fees reflected on your account in our system.
- Parents are responsible for ensuring that the fee payments are made into the correct bank account of the Academy. In the event of any change in bank account details, the changes with new payment bank details will be communicated to parents in writing via official communication from the Academy.
- If a student wishes to leave the Academy, one term’s advance notice of withdrawal must be given in writing or one term’s worth of the annual fees will be due and payable. School clearance will not be possible until all outstanding dues are settled in full. Please refer to Point #13 in the linked PDF document at the top to see the details for withdrawal.
- The Academy reserves the right to withhold results, school certificates, transcripts or any other information and/or documents until all outstanding dues are settled in full.
- Admitted students who demonstrate financial need and duly fill in and submit the application along with required supporting documents within the stipulated time, can be considered for Financial Aid. An independent Financial Aid Committee is responsible for reviewing and approving any request for financial aid by students. 5 The following Residential Programme fees are applicable to international students and payable in USD: Grades 6 and 7: USD 25,800; Grades 8 to 10: USD 28,700; and DP Program: USD 35,900. All other charges are applicable as per the table above.
6 A Sibling Discount of 5% is applicable on Tuition Fees for the second child and subsequent children.
7 Tuition fee is payable in three equal instalments, no later than 15 July, 31 November, and 1 March for each academic year.
8 Tuition fees may be paid in full for the whole year with an early-payment discount of 3%, if paid before 15 July. This discount is applicable on the net amount payable after other discounts have been deducted.
9 The fees can be paid in US dollars or Kenyan Shillings. The US Dollars fees will be indicated on the invoice using the Central Bank of Kenya’s exchange rate on the invoice date. The Academy however reserves the right to change this policy.
10 The Academy will charge a monthly surcharge of 3% on the total outstanding dues older than 30 days, and in case the fees are not paid within one month’s period following the deadline, the student will not be allowed to attend classes as well as participate in the other activities undertaken by the Academy.
11 Tuition fee includes course fee, use of essential course books, library books, IT and science laboratory equipment and certain classroom supplies. This however does not include uniform.
12 Starting from Grade 4, students may also take up to three field trips including curriculum, bonding and optional trips, for which the parents will be invoiced separately. Information on these field trips will be shared with parents at least one month in advance.
13 Exam fees for MYP and Diploma will be billed separately based on actual fee from International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO).
14 The Academy no longer accepts cash for fee payments. All payments must be made by direct bank deposit, bank transfer, or Mpesa even if payment is made by a third party such as a sponsoring organization. Parents must provide the finance office (mba-bursar@agakhanacademies.org), with a hard or an electronic copy of the proof of payment showing the full name of student and Student Identification Number within 15 days of fund transfer for issuance of payment receipt. Absence of this information may delay crediting the fees reflected on your account in our system.
