In one of the last few exercises of this academic year, students from Grade 9 took up the Getty Challenge and produced frames that paid homage to great works of art like Mona Lisa and The Son of Man.
Meet Our School Community
The students, faculty and parents of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo are a socially conscious group of people committed to the development of their communities, their nation and civil society in the world at large. They understand that knowledge is a lifelong process of inquiry that leads to intellectual and personal growth. In this section we offer vignettes of members of the Academy family who are driven by the common goal of making a positive contribution to their society.

Sporting Activities
One of the goals of the Aga Khan Academy Maputo is to create principled young people with a strong sense of integrity, honesty, fairness and justice, who respect the dignity of others.
Physical education, and competitive games and sports prepare our students for real-life situations, encouraging them to take leadership roles and allowing them to tackle challenges confidently and in a spirit of cooperation.
Inter-school sports
Our students will have the opportunity to represent their school in various sports, such as swimming, cricket, rounders, basketball, hockey, netball, football and athletics.
Teams will cater to students of all ability levels.
Clubs
We will also offer a diverse selection of sporting activities for our students during after school clubs.

About the Academy
The Aga Khan Academy Maputo is the third in a network of Aga Khan Academies established by His Highness the Aga Khan. It follows the highly successful model established by the first two Academies, which opened in Mombasa, Kenya in 2003 and Hyderabad, India in 2011.
The Aga Khan Academy Maputo has been accredited as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School for the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme.
The Academy features state-of-the-art facilities, a multicultural student body, and an experienced team of educators and staff. We provide students with education of the highest standard in order to prepare them for lives characterised by leadership and service.
Admission to the Academy is means-blind and is based on merit. We consider all eligible students regardless of socio-economic status.

As with all the Aga Khan Academies, we are committed to excellence in all aspects of education. This commitment includes the academic curriculum as well as the campus where students live and learn.
Our campus is architect designed and is being purpose built. With state-of-the-art classrooms and resource areas, and extensive sports facilities, our campus will provide an inspiring environment for both students and staff.
At the Academy, we strive to create a balance between academic demands, sports, cultural activities and community life. We challenge our students to be intellectually inquisitive and socially conscious. We also encourage them to respect and appreciate other people’s cultures, social structures, values and beliefs.

The Aga Khan Academies' academic programme has been developed through the implementation of the widely-recognised International Baccalaureate. The programme is designed to challenge students of all backgrounds.

Academic Programme
The Aga Khan Academy Maputo is currently open for Nursery, Junior and Senior School students. We offer an education of an internationally recognised standard of excellence to prepare students to become intellectually curious, global-minded citizens of the world.The Academy programme develops students who are committed to positive change and are able to understand and analyse complex issues of local, national and global significance.
Our curriculum is built on the framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB). The IB is a thorough, multidisciplinary curriculum that fosters:
- intellectual curiosity
- creativity
- leadership development
- social consciousness
- a pluralistic sensibility.
The IB is also known for preparing students for admission to the best universities in their own countries and abroad.
Our focus is on developing students' critical thinking skills and the ability to analyse issues. We also emphasise multicultural understanding and awareness. One of the ways in which we help our students develop skills for ethical leadership is through the Aga Khan Curricular Strands. These are cross-disciplinary areas of study that have been developed for the network of Aga Khan Academies.
Overall educational programme
Our curriculum is complemented by co-curricular, athletic and community service initiatives. The overall educational programme is designed to educate well-rounded, civic-minded individuals. It enhances students’ academic excellence, leadership skills, sense of civic responsibility, understanding of global issues, and analytical and study skills. The programme also reinforces an understanding of local languages, history, cultures and environment.
After completing the full Academy programme, students will be expected to be computer literate and have a thorough understanding of the diverse academic disciplines covered in the IB curriculum. They should have mastered at least two languages, including English. Through the planned international exchange programme, our students will be able to enhance their foreign language learning and appreciation of other cultures.
Our graduates thus will be well prepared for the rigours of higher education and to pursue opportunities in an increasingly interdependent world.

Middle Years Programme
The Senior School of the Aga Khan Academy, Maputo, when it opens will be an IB World School offering the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB).
Skills for Learning and Life
The Middle Years Programme caters for students in years 7 through 11 (ages 11-16). Students in the MYP are immersed in a challenging and enriching educational environment which emphasises the mastery of basic skills, the ability to analyse and think critically, the development of self-discipline and good work habits, the acquisition of computer literacy and progressive skill development.
The MYP helps students develop an awareness of how they learn best, of thought processes and learning strategies. The programme also encourages student reflection and connections with real world issues. It includes a service component designed to encourage students to become aware of community needs, and to learn from their involvement in carefully organised service activities.
The Curriculum
The MYP integrates the study of the major disciplines, including languages, sciences, literature, social sciences, mathematics, arts, technology and physical education. The five AK curricular strands, which are unique to the Aga Khan Academies, are integrated throughout the curriculum.
Students’ final performance in the MYP is assessed by teams of teachers and validated by the IB through a process of careful external monitoring and moderation of student grades. This process ensures parity of standards across some 600 MYP schools worldwide.

Admission Requirements
Choosing a school is an important decision in a child's and parent's life. We are here to help and answer any questions you might have.
We currently welcome enquiries of students for our Nursery, Junior and Senior School.
Our programmes are based on the principles and practices of the International Baccalaureate. The admission requirements for the Academy's programmes, including language requirements, are outlined below.
For the Aga Khan Academy Maputo, the admissions process can be followed in either English or Portuguese.Admission is competitive and based on student merit, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. The Academy endeavours to meet the demonstrated financial need of each admitted student.
Nursery School
Kindergarten 1, 2 and 3: Early Years Programme
Students entering Kindergarten 1 must be 3 years of age by the 31st of August of the year of entry.
All prospective students must demonstrate the potential for high achievement. Each applicant will participate in a variety of assessment exercises.
Students may enter the nursery section without a strong prior knowledge of one of the languages of instruction, English or Portuguese.
Junior School
Grades 1–5: Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Students entering Grade 1 will ideally have completed at least three years of nursery school and must be 6 years of age by the 31st of August of the year of entry.
All prospective students must demonstrate a potential for high academic achievement and competency in literacy and numeracy. Each applicant will participate in a variety of assessment exercises.
Students may enter the first three years of the PYP without a strong prior knowledge of one of the languages of instruction, English or Portuguese. However, in the last three years of the PYP, students must have a basic level of proficiency in both languages before they may be admitted.
Senior School
Grades 6–10: Middle Years Programme (MYP)
All students applying for a place in the Senior School must have attained high scholastic achievement in their former educational institutions. They must also demonstrate a keen interest and participation in community service projects outside the classroom and/or extracurricular activities such as sporting activities, clubs, arts and music.
All prospective students must demonstrate a potential for high academic achievement and competency in literacy and numeracy at the school in addition to providing past student grade reports and certificates of achievement.
Grades 11–12: Diploma Programme (DP)
Applicants for the Diploma Programme must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement as well as a record of active involvement in extracurricular and community service activities.
New students will not be accepted in the year of the Diploma exam

Tvisha Devavarapu - Class of 2018 top scorer
Tvisha never shied away from sports and captained the Nizam house in her final year of school. She also loves reading and led the Academy's Modern Literature in Translations Club. At the same time, Tvisha was also excellent academically. “Football enabled me to balance my studies,” she says. “It was an exhilarating stress buster. I’ve never had more fun in school than whilst I was playing football.” She also attributes a lot of friendships she made to the game.
Tvisha joined the Academy in grade 9 because she felt that the school’s values aligned with hers. “The Academy’s mission statement offered a more promising and holistic learning experience compared to the other schools,” she said. Once at the Academy, Tvisha lapped up all she could of the IB curriculum. She enjoyed the objectivity in Biology and Maths classes, and also appreciated the nuances of History and English. She was an active participant in Theory of Knowledge discussions and service activities.
Tvisha volunteered at Teach for Change, an NGO that gave her the opportunity to teach at a public school. “I didn’t only aid the children with their communication and leadership skills but also worked on my own character and values,” she says of the experience. “I strengthened my commitment, resilience, and communication skills, learning to accept and react to challenges in a proactive manner.” Grade 11 students are actively encouraged to take part in summer service internships at locations across India, working with AKDN (Aga Khan Development Network) institutions and other non-profits. “The Academy has a very unique, highly diverse and multicultural environment,” says Tvisha. “This really played a role in enabling me to broaden my perspective through a cosmopolitan way of perceiving things.”
Tvisha is headed to pursue her undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego in September 2018. In the near future, Tvisha wants to focus on science and research. But in the long run, Tvisha wants to try her hand at teaching if she gets the chance. “This must surely be the impact of my experience at the Academy,” she says. “Spending time with people like Ms. Alex, I’ve seen the dynamics of the intersection between professional study and academics and how that enables a fuller scope for learning.”
