Academy delegates attend ISHMUN 2018
Eight Academy students from grades 8-10 participated at the International School of Hyderabad Model United Nations on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th January at the Microsoft Campus in Gachibowli.
Zoya Virani, Anshuman Dutta, Zubayer Khan (grade 8), Aftikhar Mominzada, Salman Jumazada, Faiz Pabani (grade 9), and Aarav Vadhavania, Madhu Rallabandi (grade 10) debated in various committees including the Social Cultural and Humanitarian Council (agenda: refugees and xenophobia), Human Rights Council (agenda - LGBT Q+ rights), Historic Security Council (agenda: Suez Canal crisis) and the United Nations Environment Programme (agenda: natural hazards relief). Aarav received a special mention for his participation, and Aftikhar received an honourable mention – congratulations!
“It was such a fantastic experience as there were people from all over Hyderabad and it helped me to enhance my public speaking skills,” observed Aftikhar. “Representing Sudan in the Committee was enjoyable, it gave me a perspective on how the United Nation functions to improve quality of life for people around the world. Through research I came to know how Sudan is affected by its civil war and how xenophobia results from the refugee crisis. It reminded me of my own country Afghanistan which is facing similar challenges. It is up to us, the new generation, to bring about a positive change in our nations.” He added that it was wonderful to win an award as he had worked hard towards it and it was even more special because he was representing the Academy at the conference.
Priyodarshini Das, Academy MUN Coordinator who accompanied the students, told us: “I think that rather than focusing on winning awards, the students were motivated to discuss and debate upon these pressing global issues and learn from other delegates as for most of them this was their first inter-school MUN Conference. The International School of Hyderabad had indeed organized a wonderful event in the sprawling Microsoft Campus at Gachibowli. They had even arranged for a Microsoft campus tour which our students appreciated.”
