Academy delegates bag five awards at CHIREC Model United Nations
20 students from grades 6-8 participated in the CHIREC Junior Model United Nations conference held between 2nd – 4th November 2018 at CHIREC International School in Hyderabad. The young delegates were enthusiastic to discuss and debate on issues that included denuclearisation, freedom of press, forced labour, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labour. They were primarily part of four committees: UN Security Council; Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM); International Labour Organization (ILO); and Disarmament and International Security (DISEC).
For some grade 6 students, this was their first ever MUN conference. While Devansh bagged a special mention award, Shivaryan received a verbal mention. Kaushik from grade 7 was praised by the chairperson of the committee for being extremely well prepared with extensive research on the agenda. He won the High Commendation award for representing China in the committee and actively taking part in the resolution making process.
Meanwhile, his classmate Garv won the Best Delegate award from his committee, the ILO, by captivating his chair’s attention. He not only raised points backed by evidence against his opponent group of delegates but made sure that the resolution of his alliance was passed with a majority vote. Hussain and Alaina won the special mention award.
All the delegates were trained by Gitika Joganpally of DP1 who is the mentor of the enrichment programme MUN club since the beginning of this academic year in August. Gitika has been an avid debater in MUNs, the Vice-Chair of ECOSOC at AKAHMUN 2018, and will be the Under Secretary General at the Academy Metro MUN to be held in December 2018. Her expertise and knowledge no doubt aided the delegates to reach new heights of success at CHIREC – thank you, Gitika!
