Academy Girls Champions of Swimming Competition
Girl power permeated the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad swimming pool on Thursday, 18 February as the grade 3-5 girls brought home the trophy as overall champions of the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad Primary Years Programme (PYP) Network Interschool Swimming Championships.
Our girls outdistanced six other schools (Srinidhi, Oakridge Gachibowli and Oakridge Bachupally, Indus International, Glendale and Neeraj) in the competition.
In addition to a strong team performance that netted 137 overall points, the team had five first-place finishers. Winning gold were: Alina Roy, grade 4, 25 m backstroke; Iqra, grade 5, 25m butterfly; Navys, grade 3, 25m butterfly; Aashna Lakhani, grade 5, 25m freestyle; and Tanisha, grade 4, 25 m freestyle.
The boys tried hard the following day, but finished sixth out of seven teams. However, there were some strong individual performances, including Shubham Jaydip who received two gold medals – one for the grade 3, 25m backstroke and one for the grade 3, 25m butterfly. Another gold went to Garv Joshi, in grade 4 for the 25m butterfly.
The championships, the first of their kind at the Academy, were a monumental success as the PE team did a stellar job of organizing the two-day event. It featured fierce competition and was infused with positive energy, having spectators dancing in the stands.
