Aladdin – the Academy Senior School Musical
After a rhythmic introduction from the grade 10 tabla group and a succession of budding guitar and keyboard players, 150 Middle Years Programme (MYP) students took part in the presentation of the story of Aladdin in the last week of school for 2016. This was a lighthearted end-of-year musical enjoyable for performers and audience alike.
Day and residential students had the opportunity to come together either through singing or acting. Several rousing choruses were especially memorable – "In the Market Place” and “I’ve had enough of all their expectations” – all ably accompanied by Saahit K. on percussion.
Ayaan was a cheerful and endearing Aladdin whilst Sayema as Jasmine told the story. Their singing roles were taken by a small group of singers who had given up many of their lunchtimes to perfect their two-part songs: most notably “I still believe”.
Lalith was grisly as an evil Abanazar, constantly tormented by Wantu, played by Ilyan. Jemin was a sparkling genii and policeman; Rutvik a DJ and policewoman, with Saloni commanding attention as a fearsome and social climbing Widow Twankey. The suitors (Kameel, Ali and Shirhan) tried to dazzle Jasmine quite unsuccessfully despite the efforts of the king (Samuel).
A large group of supporting and very willing characters provided an enjoyable afternoon’s musical entertainment.
Well done!
