Bringing mathematics to life
During Super Saturday on 27th October 2018, Junior School celebrated Maths Mela, a mathematics-themed day with different activities and a parade. As per tradition, the parade was led by grade 5, with Soha Surani and Yashita Cherredi compèring the event. The parade was followed by mathematics related events for the rest of the day, and students and teachers came dressed in costumes relevant to the theme. Numbers have never looked so fun and wacky!
The parade began at the lawns with Soha and Yashita introducing each grade and their respective themes. This year’s themes, in ascending order of grades, were: shapes, measurement, data handling, numbers and patterns. Each student got an opportunity to speak about their costume. The audience had a hearty laugh at the comperes' witty lines. “I loved anchoring the show and making everyone laugh,” Yashita said. “It was great because we took responsibility to lead and be independent.”
After the parade, students proceeded to five centers based of the parade themes. Each center had assigned activities for every grade level. Grade 5 students displayed immense patience and provided support to their juniors. Vivaan, grade 3, said, “I learned about different concepts related to mathematics in a fun way. I felt as if the seniors were our teachers.”
Students of the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad are groomed to be stewards in whichever field they choose in life. The Super Saturday programme gives students the chance to bring this mission to life. “It felt nice to be able to instruct our juniors and even nicer when they learned something from us,” said Yashita.
