Celebrating Science!
The Happiness Saturday #7 was dedicated to celebrating Science in the form of the Junior School Science Fair. It was a day when all the PYP students showcased their science skills and understanding of scientific concepts.
Each student came up with an inquiry question based on the theme chosen by the grade. They conducted experiments and created working models to find answers to their questions and shared their discoveries with the Junior Schools parents on 13 February 2016. It was evident to the teachers that their students had evolved in their comprehension and application of scientific ideas and processes.
On the day of the fair, grade 1 students charmed everyone with their bug outfits, in line with their particular theme of inquiry. Parents felt extremely proud as this was probably the first time they had an opportunity to speak in a gallery walk.
Grade 2 students morphed into mini-botanists as they delved into the world of plants. They demonstrated their comprehensive knowledge about the plant species by explaining the various parts, functions, properties and applications.
Several experiments were conducted by grade 3 students to illustrate the properties of different kinds of materials, using scientific methods. Their conclusions were then shared with the visitors.
The grade 4 classroom resembled a geology lab with students describing their models based on earth and space. They spoke confidently about rocks, minerals, landforms, graphs, planets, weather and many other geography-related concepts.
Body systems was the theme chosen by grade 5 students. With the use of appropriate scientific vocabulary, the students took the visitors on a tour of many of the body systems, the organs and ways to keep them healthy.
After the science fair, we also sneaked in a few hours of sporty fun for the Junior School students, which for them was the cherry on the cake!
