Class of 2017 update – IB DP results and further education
We are very proud of our 2017 graduates’ achievements in their IB Diploma Programme results, university placements and scholarships. Academy graduates are among just over 159,000 students around the world to gain the IB Diploma this year. An unprecedented 25 students, 35% of the cohort, gained an English-Hindi IB Bilingual Diploma, a testament to the IB’s, and the Academy’s, commitment to supporting multilingualism as fundamental to increasing intercultural understanding and international-mindedness. Our top achiever, Sakshi Gala, scored a 39 and is now pursuing a degree in Political Science under a full scholarship at the Abu Dhabi campus of New York University. 60 Academy alumni are on their way to 30 colleges and universities in India, UK, US, Canada, UAE and Australia. The rest are taking a gap year.
Students from this cohort received 240 placement offers in multiple universities, including 124 acceptances that appear in the Global Top 400 ARWU Shanghai Index rankings. Scholarship offers exceeded USD 3.3 million this year. 17% students have been awarded 100% tuition and 125% scholarships (that include living costs in addition to tuition). 58% have received bursaries and grants.
Three students – Eva Raiyani, Nafees Charaniya and Ariq Kapadia – are the recipients of Ontario Government full tuition scholarships as part of a privileged agreement between the Province of Ontario and the Aga Khan Academies. Additionally, Shaheed Hajiyani and Faiz Bandeali were awarded full scholarships to read Political Science and Business Management respectively, at Simon Fraser University. Arnaz Lalani, Class of 2017 student representative and speaker at the Graduation Ceremony, received seven scholarship offers from Hult International Business School, University of Tampa, Depauw University, Trinity University, Simon Fraser University and Drexel University. She has chosen to pursue Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University. The wealth of an Academy education is measured not just through academic results, but various parameters arising from the holistic development of students through a rigorous education set on the foundations of pluralism, ethics and global citizenship. Academy students are carefully identified for their intellectual ability, leadership potential and commitment to helping others. Despite socio-economic, cultural and language barriers, our Class of 2017 graduates have successfully navigated the higher education landscape to pursue careers in cinema, automotive engineering, nursing, aviation, law, psychology, international relations, mechatronics…and many more. As they begin their journey at university, we wish them the very best and are confident in their abilities to make significant contributions as agents of change in a rapidly shifting world.
