GLIMPSES INTO THE MEDIEVAL WORLD

11 November 2022

Showcasing their inquiry into the medieval period, students of Grades 7 and 8 presented models they had created of artefacts and monuments. The “Gallery Walk” presented a wide variety of student work ranging from the Delhi Sultanate to the Roman Empire. This learning opportunity helped students develop their self-management skills as they were required to create short-term and long-term goals for themselves in order to complete their research and begin planning their models. This activity helped the students exercise learner autonomy as they thought about their own learning and based on their area of interest finalised their inquiry. Clear here to read some of the student reflections.

Student Reflections

Hello there! I was one of the people who participated in Humanities Day 2022. I worked with my partner, Shyreen, and we both made the Qutub Minar from the Slave/Mamluk Dynasty. It was a great experience! We made our first Qutub Minar with straws and thermocol, but when it broke, we made another one, which taught us the importance of trial and error. We made a model, chart, and presentation. We creatively designed our script, chart, and model. While presenting, we talked about the monument's origin, purpose, and value to the dynasty. We got some pretty good comments. So, overall, the Medieval World gallery walk was a huge success for us. We learnt a lot from it. I want to thank our teachers, Ms Ritu and Ms Nabila, for helping my class and me.

On 10th November 2022, we celebrated our inquiries into the Medieval Period in Senior school. For this task, we had to make a model/artefact/sculpture from Medieval India of our choice. My friends and I collaborated to create some awesome and unique models and artefacts. It was a memorable experience for all of us as this experience of researching and recreating objects and monuments of the medieval period enhanced our learning experience. I created Humayun’s tomb which is located in Delhi India. Humayun's tomb was made in memory of Humayun the great emperor of the Mughal dynasty he ruled from 1530 to 1540 and again from 1555 to 1556. The reason behind this Humayun's tomb made is that when Humayun died in 1556 so his first wife Hamida Banu had got this tomb created to honour him. In 1997 AKTC (Aga khan trust for culture) renovated it too for India's 50th independence anniversary.

This was my first time ever attending and being a part of the Medieval World gallery walk and it was a very memorable experience for me. The planning started all the way back in September, and throughout the process, 8A enjoyed learning more about the medieval era that shapes us today. One thing that I personally really enjoyed in this process of inquiring into a specific dynasty was recreating an artefact/monument, as it really helped our artistic abilities but also added a visual way of learning in our presentations. The skills that I developed throughout this process were time management, research and collaboration skills.
