Hour of Code – joining the largest learning event in history!
Every single student and member of staff was given the time and opportunity to code their own computer programme during Computer Science Education Week which ran from 4th – 10th December.
The Hour of Code is a global phenomenon reaching millions of students in over 180 countries. In India, over 1000 Hour of Code events were registered this year. Design faculty, Vani Vishwanath and Michelle Massaro, took the lead in organising the Hour of Code at the Academy, as part of the effort to continually bring programming activities within the reach of students.
The Hour of Code was launched as a one-hour initiation into the world of computer science, designed to demystify "code", and demonstrate that anybody could learn the basics. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity.
“We live in a world surrounded by technology,” said Michelle. “But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. And we know that whatever fields our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. Our Hour of Code is making a statement that the Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills.”
Students were enthralled with creating robots, designing games and their very own Google Doodles. Anish of grade 11 shared, “The Hour of Code was an interesting experience for us. We were introduced to coding, usually considered a very daunting task, in a fun and simple manner. The activities were fun to do and I feel that I learnt a lot in that one hour!”
