Introducing Gaura Joshi - our new Humanities teacher
A short introduction on who you are, your experience, where you are joining us from.
I have joined the Aga Khan Academy in the capacity of a Humanities Teacher and I will be teaching Global Politics in the Diploma Programme and Individuals and Societies in the Middle Years Programme. I am a lawyer turned educator who has been driven to the field of academia by her love for research and a burning passion to be a contributor in making world a better place for our present and future generations. The quote by C.S. Lewis has been a driving factor in my journey as an educator “The task of the modern educator is not to cut down jungles, but to irrigate deserts.” And I believe that true purpose of education is to learn values and skills that will help us live in harmony with ourselves and our environment. I have been an IB teacher for the last 7 years, prior to joining to the Academy, I was working with Pathways School Gurgaon as a Personal Project Coordinator and Global Politics Teacher.
What made you want to join the Academy?
As a young lawyer drawn to the field of education, and transitioning into becoming an IB educator, I was impressed by the foresight reflected in the vision of the Aga Khan Academy, Hyderabad. My own ideas and faith regarding the need for a value based system of education aligned well with the Academy’s mission of grooming future leaders who are culturally rooted and internationally minded. Being a part of the Aga Khan Academy earlier, (from 2014-17) had been a rich learning experience and my willingness to join back the academy comes from the wonderful 3 years I spent here while I was training to become an IB teacher.
Your vision for what you are leading/teaching at the Academy.
As a teacher of Humanities, I aspire to work with young minds and help them build confidence and knowledge to become positive change makers. I envision extension of classroom learning into enagement activities, personal and service projects.
What you are hoping to achieve with your students this academic year?
I hope to create an effective online learning environment and endeavour that my students do not feel disadvantaged due to the pandemic rather feel empowered to deal with the changing times. I would focus my classes towards skill building especially their self-management skills.
