Junior School Summer Sonatas
This year’s Junior School concert, Summer Sonatas, was held on Friday, 11th May. Over 150 students from creche to grade 5 participated, making it one of the largest PYP performances of the academic year.
Led by Junior School music facilitators, Subhadip Sarkar, Samuel Mabo and Arshad Ali, students took to stage and performed a setlist that incorporated traditional Indian music, as well as songs in Portuguese, and classical Western instrumental pieces. It was delightful to see the creche students’ choral recital. This was the first time day care students participated in the Junior School concert.
Other headliners of the concert were Kkashyapi Chaudhri of grade 1, who was the youngest solo performer at the concert, and grade 4 form tutor Anna Palmetshofer, who joined the Junior School tabla group ‘Pulse’ in their percussion piece. “‘I was happy when I was playing tabla,” said Kkshyapi. “I was also happy when everyone clapped for me.”
Other performances included a violin solo, a recorder recital, and a band performance that covered The Beatles’ 1966 chart topper, ‘Yellow Submarine.’ The largest group performing was ‘Phoenix,’ a choir ensemble of students of grades 1-5. They closed the concert with a performance of Abba’s 1979 single, ‘I Have a Dream.’
All the school's music teachers are very proud of the work that students put in. “It’s been wonderful working with these young maestros,” Subhadip said. “The showed commitment and sincerity and put in hard work.”
The Junior School concert is an opportunity for our talented PYP students to experience playing for an audience. With the academic year coming to an end this concert gave parents and teachers the opportunity to come together and see how far their children have come in the past few months of school, as summer and the academic year come to a close.
