Little learners shine at the PYP exhibition 2019
The Primary Years Programme exhibition 2019 was held on Saturday 9th March at the Academy Junior School. A momentous occasion on the grade 5 academic calendar, this year’s Exhibition saw inspiring and informative projects. All 28 students of grade 5 presented using research that they conducted themselves.
The PYP exhibition is a chance for students to showcase their learning and understanding of the essential elements of PYP. It is, in a sense, the culmination of their time in the PYP. Students try to integrate the learning from their research with local or global issues and take relevant actions to bring about changes in the society they live in.
Topics for this year’s exhibition were: climate change, gender equality, sustainable cities, innovation, health and hygiene, peace and justice, animal welfare, and clean energy. Students teams were organized around these topics, and each group had teachers acting as mentors, helping students with their research. “My teachers and mentors were supportive in guiding and mentoring me in our projects,” said Bhavesh of grade 5. “I learnt about different things from our topic ‘Sustainable Cities’ like carbon dioxide emissions, fossil fuels, ethical consumption, and the actions that make a sustainable city.”
In the build up to the event, guest s peakers visited Junior School to speak with students about their projects. Among them was Illiyan Hariyani, grade 11, who has worked with organizations in developing sustainable fuels and in the use of plastics. Illiyan spoke to our young learners about his projects, the environment and sustainability. Vyjayanthi Mogli, a prominent human rights activists in Hyderabad, also spoke to students of junior school about her work in fighting for gender equality. Several other speakers from the campus community spoke with Students built on their topics along the transdisciplinary themes: sharing the planet, how we organize ourselves, how the world works, and who we are.
The PYP exhibition brings together the entire student and parent community at the Academy and gives us a glimpse of what the future holds and who the leaders of that future will be. If the PYP exhibition is anythiing to go by, we're in safe hands!
