Mathematics Day
The 22nd of December 2012 was the 125th birthday of the late Srinivasa Ramanujan—an inspirational Indian mathematician for whom 2012 was made the “National Year of Mathematics.” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared the year in honour of the contributions Ramanujan made to mathematics, and the inspiration he offered future generations in this discipline.
In celebration of this, the Senior School took the opportunity to run a Mathematics Day to raise awareness of the contributions made by Indian mathematicians and to offer the students a chance to engage with mathematics in different ways.
Diploma Programme students led debates in the morning with a panel of eager staff judges watching over proceedings. The topics of discussion were as follows:
- mathematics is invented not discovered
- mathematics is of little value to our future, and to society in general.
MYP students then spent the afternoon interacting with an unusual array of interactive mathematics games and activities.
