Personal Project Spotlight - Sweni Hamid
Do you think Visual Art is an important medium of communication?
Yes! It not only helps us to communicate meaning but also helps us to express complicated emotions that cannot be expressed by talking or using normal gestures.
How far do you think you stayed true to the Identities and Relationship context that you undertook?
Identities and Relationships were an important part of my project. Knowing the identity of the dreamer helped me connect to the dream I was drawing and give me context. The interviews I took helped me bond with the dreamer as well, as I got to know more things about them; from their fears to their actions. I kept going back to this again and again whenever I felt lost while drawing.
Were you able to observe a reflection of your initial ideas in your final artworks?
Definitely! This project was exactly how I imagined it - something which will not only help me know a person better but also help me to understand different actions and how our minds reflect on them. After completing the project, I saw how many people can have similar dreams with different emotions based on their acts and personality.
What advice would you give to someone who was looking to do a project similar to yours?
Realistic advice would be to know what you like and are interested in. For example, I really liked the concept of "dreaming" and drawing was something I wanted to improve in. These were the things that motivated me to continue working, whether it was completing my products or continuing my report. Furthermore, knowing and accepting that the process is going to be hard is the key to pushing your limits. Challenging yourself is one of the main foci of personal project, so I advise you to be as straightforward as possible!
What was the most valuable experience that you took away from the process?
The experience of transformation and creation was the most valuable thing that I took away from this project. I also found my final art style, which is helping me to improve my art. I also had a lot of fun creating sketches and drawings and making something that was only seen by one person and had no visual prompt whatsoever.
How would you say your project has impacted you and those around you?
This project has made me better at art, more organized too, and it also helped me to balance school and my personal time - this used to be something I struggled with.
Would you want to continue undertaking similar projects in the future? Why or why not?
I would definitely like to take on more projects like this. It would help me to understand more ways in which art can help me to express myself and bond more with people.
