Save The Sparrows....Academy Green School Initiative.
“Little birds of loyalty and love, come fluttering down to our windows. They chirp and sing in their golden voices. But we engrossed in our rush, with deadened heart and sense, don’t know our loss until they are gone.”
Sparrows have been one of the friendliest and most social birds man has ever known. Yet, these birds are desperately struggling for survival and existence. In our thirst for modernisation, we are driving them out of their homes in their natural habitats. Owing to rapid urbanisation, deforestation, extensive use of pesticides, wastage of resources, and technological advancements in mobile communication, today we hardly get to see them anymore. The bitter truth is that they have nowhere to go and nothing to eat.
We, from the Green School Committee at AKAH, aim to give sparrows our help and support in every way possible. We take our inspiration from Mrs. Rajani Vakkalanka who leads the Citizens’ Action for Local Biodiversity Awareness and Conservation (CALBAC) Project. She told us how we as individuals, can take action to provide support to sparrows. We must grow more plants, to encourage birds to come back to their homes. Excessive use of pesticides and chemicals in gardens must be stopped. To do our part in protecting them, we students plan to build nest-boxes using recyclable, eco-friendly materials, and put bird-feeders and water bowls around the school.
The trees, the wind, the water, the earth, the sky – everything around us, does not belong to just us. The planet is not just ours alone. It belongs to all species. We must live in harmony with all other species on this planet, and give them the love and respect they deserve. With small steps, we can make a positive difference, and save the sparrows!
