Showing gratitude to Academy support staff
The last Super Saturday of the 2017-18 academic year at the Academy Junior School was devoted to action through service. It was time to express our gratitude to the housekeeping staff, whose contributions to our wonderful environment are of immense value, but often go unnoticed. To thank them for their dedication, grade 1 students served them lunch. The tiny tots prepared pani puri, lemonade and popcorn, with the help of teachers.
Grade 2 took the initiative to clean the campus in and around the Junior School, while grade 3 entertained the housekeeping staff with puppet shows, origami and having fun on iPads. They showed them how to take selfie photos, find their homes using the Google Earth app, and create beautiful intricate designs using the Symmetry Lab app. A few students helped with Telugu translation.
Grade 4 spent the morning with the gardeners. They handled secateurs, hoes and sickles for the first time in their life! They cut hedges back into shape, cleaned away dead leaves from the ground, and dug out weeds near the ornamental plants and flower beds. Grade 5 students meanwhile conducted a survey with the admin staff on reduce, recycle and reuse. On the basis of that survey, they came up with the idea of spreading awareness around the Academy community to save energy (including curbing use of paper, water and electricity). They prepared posters and brochures, and made short videos to create awareness on saving energy.
Grade 4 student, Inaya Charaniya, said: “Today I understood how much hard work the housekeeping staff does to keep our school clean and tidy, irrespective of the weather conditions. Working with them, I realized that no job should be considered big or small, but should be appreciated in the same way.”
