Student Life Explained Through Street Theatre
The Street Theatre Club had started as a temporary club under the enrichment programme. For three months, students who were a part of the Yearbook Committee participated in this club and learnt the nuances of street theatre. Street theatre is the most simplistic form of theatrical performance, set apart by the fact that there is no specific audience. Street plays are a medium through which many important issues are touched upon. It is an art form which spreads awareness and educates a million people through the various scenes, jingles and narratives.
The enrichment time was used by the students and the supervisors to deliberate over important issues of student life and then incorporate it into an interesting script, which would then be enacted by the students. The final performance in the Senior School and Junior School took place on 29th and 30th of October, 2015 respectively. The venue for this performance was the Commons during the lunch hour for the Senior School, and the PYP playground area during the short break for the Junior School.
The street play was on “Open-mindedness” which is a crucial part of the IB Learner Profile. The students also incorporated the AKA Strand of pluralism and beautifully depicted it in their narratives by highlighting the importance of understanding the identities that are different from one’s own, and the appreciation of diversity. They started their performance after collecting a huge crowd of students around them and grabbing the attention of the students and faculty members alike through various tactics that they learnt in their enrichment classes.
The positive response from the students and the support and suggestions from the faculty encouraged the members of the club and will ensure that the spirit of street theatre will always be alive in all our hearts. We hope to see many more instances where the students of the Academy will use it as a medium to spread meaningful messages and awareness among their fellow mates.
