Table tennis comes to the Academy

18 January 2018
Grade 11 student Aman Mithani writes about the table tennis tournament that took place over the weekend of 6-7 January 2018.

Table tennis for me personally has always been about entering into a different world and I felt that students could really use that in order to better cope with the rigorous demands of the International Baccalaureate curriculum. This is where the idea of an intra-school table tennis tournament came up as a CAS activity we could implement at the Academy. It was definitely a challenge to get people to participate, but we somehow managed to register a total of 40 players after determinedly publicity!

Table tennis is a sport that can be played by everyone regardless of age – be it 18 months or a 100 years old! This very popular sport had not yet caught on at the Academy, however, so we decided it was time to bring something unique and add to the sports portfolio at our school.

The tournament was divided into five categories: junior boys, junior girls, senior boys, senior girls and faculty. We also decided to include doubles where we got six pairs to compete against each other.

The tournament served as a great opportunity to identify hidden talents and nurture them. It turned out to be a great success as we had the active participation and enthusiasm of all the contestants, which is what we as organisers most wanted! We would like to specially acknowledge Mr. Ravi (Head of Sports Department), Mr. Suresh (Dean of Students) and Mr. Venkat (CAS Coordinator) for all their effort and time in helping us put this together.
