Tarun Seth: Making mathematical thinking visual
The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad welcomed new staff members from around the world for the 2022-2023 academic year. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will feature profiles of the new staff, introducing who they are and how they want to bring change to the Academy.
We kick off the new staff spotlight series with Tarun Seth, Head of Department (Mathematics) at the Senior School. Tarun is a passionate and enthusiastic mathematics teacher-educator who is dedicated to fostering a conducive and challenging academic environment that sets expectations for every student based on their potential and learning objectives.
Tarun brings with him, 24 years of teaching experience. Before joining the Academy he was at Woodstock School, Mussoorie as Head of Department (Mathematics) and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) maths teacher. He is also a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship which gave him the opportunity to teach the American mathematics curriculum - Advanced Placement (AP) - in a high school in San Francisco.
“I'm keen to focus on more peer collaboration, implementing meaningful teaching strategies and assessments, and supporting the team in their respective professional growth,” says Tarun. “As a maths teacher and HoD, I want to make each and every student realise that maths is not at all tough and scary and everyone has the ability to understand it. The content is not the issue. The main problem lies when there is a gap in prior knowledge and problem-solving skills. My long-term vision is to see students viewing maths as an interesting subject, and learning and applying concepts confidently.”
“I want to convey to each and every student that don't be scared of asking questions and begin from the level wherever you are at present. Don't hesitate in asking basic questions to your teacher. If you are unclear about any concept, even if you are at a higher grade level, we are here to support you. I have always believed in my students, and strongly feel that students will achieve their desired learning outcomes.”
