Team Gypsy starts making music on campus

06 August 2020

The primary purpose of creating music was to learn something new and invest the free time I had in quarantine for something constructive. To elaborate, for a long time I wanted to expand my horizons in music and music production was one of the areas I was interested in but didn’t have enough time and energy to invest upon. Similarly, my secondary objective was spreading my music pieces that feature emotions like happiness, sadness, longing etc. to the individuals in similar situation as me.

I was always interested in music from a young age but it was after coming to the Aga khan academy that the opportunity to learn music became accessible to me. It has been 5 years since I have been learning music, I am most proficient in playing is saxophone and guitar. In this 5-year time period I learned a lot about music theory and how certain aspects and elements are manipulated to create a specifically desired effect. I have heard a lot of pieces from different genres and sub-genres (especially Jazz, classical music, film music, lo-fi etc.) and I was fascinated on the manipulation of elements of music.

However, I never had hands on experience of implementing these but it all changed when I was introduced to music programming software. I did try and create some music pieces but I wasn’t very pleased with what I had created. The underlying issue was that I wasn’t familiar with the program. After many hours dedicated to research, I was able to implement some of the changes I desired and the music pieces started to sound less subpar. The continuation of this cycle of exploration, research and improvement and making my music pieces sound authentic is what inspires and motivates me to create more pieces.
