Theatre group runners up in city-wide competition
Academy drama students came second place in the Srujan Theatre Festival’s inter-school theatre competition. The festival was held on 17th August at the Ravindra Bharathi auditorium in Hyderabad.
Our students performed Charandas Chor by Habib Tanvir, an encore of their successful summer production at the Academy in March 2018. Other schools also staged adaptations, most of them using the forum to talk about social issues. Students noticed the street-theatre style performances that schools put up. “All plays carried messages and we truly had a lot to learn from them,” said grade 9 student Zoya Virani.
The Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad offers theatre as a subject in its curriculum, giving students the time and opportunity to explore the art form. Our theatre department, headed by Mr. Chandrasekhar Indla, gives students the exposure needed to understand the performing arts through annual productions, trips to professional theatre outfits and competitive performances like this one.
Students were pleased to have the professional experience, and to perform at the famous Ravindra Bharathi. “This festival has truly boosted our spirits,” said grade 9 student, Mehek Charanya. “We look forward to grabbing every possible opportunity to showcase our talent.” Students bagged the runner up trophy and prize money.
