A treat for Academy theatre lovers
The University of Hyderabad staged an exclusive performance of their adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard for Academy students. Academy drama teacher, Chandrasekar Indla, English as an Additional Language teacher, Vasanthi Thandlam and Academy fellow, Himani Sood, accompanied 34 students to the production.
Academy students who watched the play were bowled over by the acting, set design and costumes. Nihan Khoja said that the play’s message about class divide fit in nicely with the MYP Global Context of orientation in space and time.
Students also said they learned a lot about 20th century Russia. “Rather than learning history from reading it in a dusty textbook,” said Vasanthi, “theatre makes history come alive right before our eyes.” The 115 year old play was the last one written by the playwright.
