Beautiful and vibrant capulana clothing, a Mozambican traditional attire, music and more could be seen and heard on 25 May as Junior School students and teachers at the Aga Khan Academy Maputo commemorated Africa Day.
Africa Day honours the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), on 25 May 1963, which centres on liberation movements against colonialism and aparatheid and celebrates the ongoing progress the continent continues to make. While recognising the determination of the people of Africa against foreign domination and exploitation, Africa Day also focuses on appreciating the continent's rich histories, cultures, languages, foods and more.
At AKA Maputo, a special assembly was held for Junior School students where they performed dances and skits. The JS students also participated in a parade where they displayed their beautiful capulana outfits as they marched towards the Senior School with drums and music.
Leading up to Africa Day, all Primary Years Programme (PYP) grade levels learned about Africa through a unit in their classes whilst preparing for the celebration. The PYP students then conducted their own research on the various countries, languages, clothing, food and more and presented their findings to their JS peers and teachers on Africa Day.
Special activities were also planned by the teachers for the students as part of the Africa Day celebration.
