The Aga Khan Academy Maputo’s agent of change: Esther Nondi
The IB has added Portuguese to the language acquisition, and language and literature subjectsas a section of their teaching programme, which will be part ofthe IB exams from May 2025. As the official language of Mozambique, Portuguese is mandatory in the national curriculum, so this is an important milestone for the AKA Maputo students.
“Portuguese had not been a part of the MYP e-assessment subjects, and yet we have many Portuguese-speaking schools not only in Mozambique, but in many countries, that teach the IB curriculum,” said Esther.
“Last academic year, the IB wrote to the AKA Maputo to tell us that they would be adding Portuguese to be assessed starting in 2025 and invited me to write up about this achievement in close collaboration with the AKA Maputo’s Portuguese teachers.”
The addition of the Portuguese language to the e-assessment will allow the AKA Maputo students to become masters of the language and be pioneers of change in Mozambique.
